10 Contemporary Films featuring Nordic Actors to Binge Watch During Lockdown


For those of you who are currently in self-isolation and lockdown, we’ve selected a number of exciting films with Nordic actors available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube or HBO directly from your couch. 

Nordic actors have taken the world by storm and they have a certain versatility and credible style is sought after across the globe. Lay back, relax and enjoy.

1. Ex-Machina, 2014

Ex-machina is a psychological thriller about a computer programmer who wins a competition to spend time in a remote private mountain retreat owned by the reclusive billionaire CEO of the company. The programmer is to administer a test to an intelligent robot with humanoid features, Ava, played by the remarkable Alicia Vikander. Ex-machina is set in an architectural dream at Juvet Landscape Hotel in Norway, this alone is a good reason to watch it.

2. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (Män som Hatar Kvinnor), 2009

A Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a must-see in Nordic cinema. It is a mix of Nordic noir detective, psychological thriller where the underdog takes the lead. A brilliant but troubled computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander played by famed Noomi Rapace, who together with a Journalist played by Michael Nyqvist are both in search of the killer of a woman, Hariet Vanger, who has been dead for forty years and they start to unravel a dark family history of the Vangers.

The sequels Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest (2009) and The Girl who Played with Fire (2009) are also great movies to see. The US remakes by David Fincher are likewise great movies, its has a faster pace, Hollywood style.

 

3. The Square, 2017

This odd and funny film art-world comedy film by Swedish writer-director Ruben Östlund, is about a curator, played by Danish actor Claes Bang, of a contemporary art museum who prepares a conceptual art exhibition called ‘The Square’. The square is a giant square shaped sculpture is intended to symbolize universal human values.  It is a strange mix of comedy and depth as it explores social norms and our belief in a community.

4. The Danish Girl, 2016

Played by Eddie Redmayne (Einar Wegener) and Alicia Vikander (is the obsession with her obvious?). The Danish Girl explores the life of both painters Einar (later known as Lili Elbe) and Gerda Wegener in the 1920s. Einar is one of the first known at the time to undergo sexual reassignment from male to female, and the film explores the journey of a transgender pioneer.

5. Captain Fantasic, 2016

With a huge portfolio of great films including the epic Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Eastern Promises, Green Book and Dangerous Method, Viggo Mortensen in Captain Fantastic (is a Little miss sunshine-esque) plays a father who raises his 6 kids off-grid in the forests in the US. He teaches them survivalist and socialist ideals. They are forced to return to the American society and reacquaint themselves, and the adventure begins.

6. King of Devil’s Island (Kongen av Bastoy), 2010

Set in snowy Balstoy, a fjord near Oslo in 1915, this film is a  true story of the Bastoy Boys Home correctional facility in Norway that housed young boys aged 11 to 18. The facility’s governor -Bestyreren sadistic disciplinary methods, played by Stellan Skarsgård, one of the most proflific Swedish actor. The arrival of the 17 year old Elring, played by Benjamin Helstad who is put to forced labour is rumoured to have murdered someone. Elring leads a rebellion among the inmates to escape the island.

7. The Celebration (Festen), 1998

A classic and one of the most influential in Danish cinema, Festen is a dark comedy-drama about a family gathering to celebrate their respected patriarch Helge (Henning Moritzen) 60th birthday where some concealed family secrets and unlawful relationships are revealed bit by bit, starting with Ulrich Thomsen's character. The family retreat turns into a surreal and mystifying event.

8. A Royal Affair (En Kongelig Affære), 2012

A Danish historical drama starring Mads Mikkelsen and Alicia Vikander. It is a story about a how Queen Caroline Mathilda, the sister of mad king George III of Great Britain who was married to an insane Danish King Christian VII. The Queen falls in love with the intellectual royal German physician, Dr. Johann Struensee and together they risk their lives and start a revolution.

9. I Am Mother, 2019

I Am Mother is a Netflix Sci-fi thriller about a teenager played by Clara Rugaard-Larsen, who raised alone in the wake of humanity’s existence and raised by an android called Mother. Mother is designing a new generation of humans. Unexpectedly, she meets a stranger, played by Hilary Swank with whom she cultivates a relationship and suddenly they are both in jeopardy.

10. The Hunt (Jagten), 2013

If you’re looking for intense acting, Mads Mikkelsen’s performance is a blistering one in this movie. It is a movie about how an innocent lie set in rural Denmark where is closely knot, and the life of a suspected teacher is falsely accused where the loyalties and community relationships quickly fall apart.
